Genetic testing is available to determine which medications may be the most effective for clients who need medications to treat depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Clients who have tried several medications with little to no relief may feel frustrated. Genetic testing takes the guesswork out and provides a detailed report of medications most appropriate for you.
Genetic testing helps determine how your body breaks down medications by looking at your genes. A simple cheek swab is all it takes to complete this test and results are available in about a week.
Another useful test in determining treatment options is testing for the MTHFR gene variation.
The MTHFR gene gives our bodies instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This important enzyme helps our bodies transform folic acid into an active (useful) version so our bodies can use it. This active form of folic acid is an important building block of neurotransmitters that are responsible for managing anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric conditions.
MTHFR gene variation is common and may be responsible for reasons why some medications did not work to treat mental health conditions. Having this gene variation does not require additional medication and simply adding an activated folic acid supplement to your current medications will often provide symptom relief.
